Essie is a mediator, conflict resolution trainer, and theater artist. Since receiving her Graduate Certificate in Dispute Resolution in 2009, Essie has facilitated mediations and training for hundreds of clients in diverse settings, including elementary schools, universities, courts, businesses, religious organizations, detention facilities, and community non-profits.

Most recently, Essie served as the Manager of Programs and Training at the Asian Pacific American Dispute Resolution Center (APADRC), a Los Angeles mediation center specializing in serving monolingual low-income clients in their native languages. Essie has also provided coaching and training through partners including the California Lawyers for the Arts, USC Gould School of Law, and the Women's Negotiation Academy at the Straus Institute. In 2019, Essie received her Master's Degree in Dispute Resolution from the Straus Institute at Pepperdine School of Law.

As a first generation American who grew up navigating two cultures and languages, Essie loves to help people understand each other and communicate better. She draws on her experience as a produced playwright to create dynamic learning experiences for mediation clients and trainees alike. Essie is the founder of Vokative LLC, a training and coaching company focused on improving communication skills through interactive, experiential learning.

Unpacking Bias: Fostering Awareness and Growth to Diminish Discrimination in the Workplace.

Bias—implicit or explicit prejudice—is a significant barrier to creating environments that are diverse, equitable, and inclusive. Bias is also a basic feature of being human. Starting from the premise that everyone is biased, and that awareness is the first step to action, this workshop will take a deep dive into the phenomenon of bias and how it informs perception and behavior.
