Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer at Intercorp

Together with over 30 CEO´s, Zelma is supporting a group wide initiative at Intercorp to ensure inclusive practices are implemented and lived throughout all business units to deliver the Group´s promise: “To make Perú the best place to raise a family in Latin America”. Representing over 3.2% of Perú´s GDP, Intercorp delivers a range of services focused on Peru’s growing middle class to satisfy consumers’ evolving preferences for modern goods and services, mainly focused on three industries: financial services; retail (including shopping malls); and education.

With over 81,000 employees, ensuring that inclusive practices are part of their mindset and way of being is a top priority. Zelma´s aspiration is for each and every single employee to becomes an agent of change in their households and communities and contribute to make Peru a more inclusive country and reduce violence against women and minorities. Additionally, Zelma holds the position of General Counsel, Board Secretary & Executive Vice-president of Corporate Affairs at Interbank.

Prior to Interbank, Zelma joined Clifford Chance, London, as part of the Project Finance Energy Group involved in major privatization and infrastructure projects in LATAM. Before joining Clifford Chance, Zelma worked at Milbank, NYC. On the NGO front, Zelma serves on ProMujer International, Vida Perú and is the current Chairperson at CARE Perú.

Zelma holds an MBA from the University of Piura, an LLM in International Banking Law from the Center for Finance, Law & Policy, Boston University, a Master in Comparative Jurisprudence from NY University, and a Law Degree from Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, Caracas. Zelma is a member of the New York and Caracas Bar Associations. She and her husband have one child. All three reside in Lima, Perú. They have lived in 5 countries and hold three different nationalities amongst them.

Zelma will share how she learned to become an agent of change to bring the conversation about Diversity and Inclusion at Intercorp, a Peruvian economic group that represents around 3.2% of Peru's Gross Domestic Product.

Intercorp´s Diversity and Inclusión ecosystem is now impacting over 80,000 employees, their families & companies’ partners. Key learnings include: build the data, generate the business case, create a movement, set the tone from the top and, mostly make it about societal impact in order to inspire employees and partners to embrace diversity and inclusion and become agents of change, making Perú the best country in Latin America to raise a family.
